Heavy periods (Menorrhagia)

Every woman's periods are different, and it can be difficult to assess whether or not your bleeding is heavier than it should be. A period is thought to be abnormally heavy if it causes one or more of the following:

  • Flooding through to clothes or bedding.
  • You need frequent changes of sanitary towels or tampons.
  • You need double sanitary protection (tampons and towels).
  • You pass large blood clots.

Undoubtedly though, when your period begins to affect the quality of your life and your ability to work, it's something that must be addressed.

Heavy periods that are regular and not associated with disorders such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or the use of a contraceptive IUD, usually have no medical cause. However, a specific hormone called prostaglandin (PGE-2) can lead to increase blood flow and decreased blood-clotting ability and has been found to be high in women who bleed heavily. Other causes could be that if you have excess oestrogen your womb lining can build up more than necessary; or your womb, which functions as a muscle, may be poorly toned and cause more bleeding than normal.

How natural therapies can help you

Treatment for menorrhagia usually takes a minimum of 3 months. One of the main aims of the natural approach to heavy periods is to ensure that hormones are balanced and prostaglandin metabolism regulated. This can be addressed by using specific herbal medicines and nutritional supplements and also proper dietary advice. Herbal uterine tonics are also frequently prescribed to help tone the uterus. Any nutritional deficiencies caused by heavy bleeding will also be investigated and addressed.
