Bella Wellbeing - Breastfeeding

Congratulations on your beautiful baby and giving breastfeeding a go. Breastfeeding is the most natural and nutritious way to feed your baby, but it is not always easy and not always pain-free. Breastfeeding, like everything else about parenthood, is something you have to learn . It is important not to give up breastfeeding too quickly, if you’re struggling with the technique it is always best to ask a healthcare visitor for support and guidance to establish correct feeding (see green box below for lactation consultants in Cheshire East).

How natural therapies can help you

The nutritional demand whist breastfeeding is just as great (if not greater) than being pregnant. It requires a lot of energy to breastfeed and if nutrients and calories are not being met the breast milk quality and quantity can suffer along with the overall health of the mother and baby.

Dietary advice and/or supplements are given to ensure healthy calories, nutrients and adequate levels of hydration are met for sufficient milk supply. Manageable lifestyle tips may also be given to ensure the mother is feeling, as much as possible, relaxed, rested and stress-free as this can also affect milk supply and create breastfeeding problems.

There are lots of effective natural remedies that can be prescribed if you do happen to suffer any breastfeeding problems. Specific galactagogue herbs can help improve milk quantity and flow, antimicrobial herbs help fight infection and boost immunity in cases of mastitis (infection in the breast), and herbs can support the nervous system if anxiety or stress is an issue. Herbs can also be administered to enhance overall vitality, which is always important since having been pregnant, going through labour and breastfeeding can take a lot out of a mother.

Effective self-care advice can also be provided to help soothe painful breasts or cracked nipples and prevent further breast discomfort.
